Stein was a wealthy warrior from the East who came to the region and personally arranged marriage to Svala for himself. Little is known of his family or how he got his wealth, although he showed success in later dealings.

- Younger brother of Thorstein, the former Earl of Hvalrik. Possibly the same person as Stein the Cruel. He was 14 years younger than the earl, and grew up close to the earl's son Thrand (who was only six years younger than Steinthor). However, in 1347 Steinthor had a falling out. A few years after the establishment of Salem, there was a war with the Massachusetts. After a nasty battle, young Thrand was killed -- and evidently Steinthor was blamed for failing to protect him. He left Hvalrik for parts unknown the following year.

However, it was later discovered that he was killed in that raid, while his sister Thorgerd (the sole survivor) disguised herself as him to take her revenge.
