Plot Overview
The "Brygjafael Saga" campaign started in August 2001 and has had
many ongoing plotlines. You can read the
Session Summaries for details. To get a larger overview,
I have listed some of the multi-session plotlines below.
- Thorgerd's Revenge (Sessions 1-13)
Thorgerd was the daughter of a couple outlawed from the
Commonwealth for witchcraft, who went to live alone in the
wilderness with their daughter Thorgerd and son Thorfinn.
Shortly before the start of the campaign, in early spring
of 1392, her parents and brother were killed in a Redaxe
raid on their home. Thorgerd then disguised herself as
her brother Thorfinn in order to take revenge upon those
who had banished her parents. Still disguised, she also
joined the expedition against the Redaxes to avenge herself
upon them as well. Her disguise was revealed, though,
after a daring raid.
She has since partly settled down, marrying a respectable
man Arnor Tostisson. However, she still tends to ride out
with the menfolk.
- The Headless Horseman (Sessions 1-5, 17-19, 26-27)
As part of proving her parent's innocence, Thorgerd learned
that a man of Tjaraholt named Killer-Gest lied in order to
frame her parents. She eventually collected a posse to
ambush and kill him, and personally chopped off his head
in the woods Northeast of his home. They gave his head
to the Tappan tribe to appease them. Later, rumor spread of
a headless phantom which appeared at night in those woods,
near to the homestead of Syfjaourholur ("Sleepy Hollow").
- War with the Redaxes (Sessions 7-15)
The Redaxe tribes to the West have been growing more powerful,
thanks to an alliance between tribes headed by the war chief
Hiawatha. The Brygjafaelers headed a joint expedition of 140
warriors to aid local tribes (Mohicans and Appalachians)
against Redaxe aggression.
- Kjartan's Curse and Penance (Sessions 9-14,24-26)
Kjartan at first had been known as "the Troublesome" for his
eagerness to see and sing of interesting events. During the
expedition, he was bitten by a mythic horned serpent which
infected him with a violent streak that nearly consumed him.
On the raid, he nearly killed Maushop, which caused a deep
rift between him and his uncle Poul. He was saved, though, by
the wise woman Silksif. Later, he risked ignoble death to
avert a war between Hvalrik and the Narragansett. He also
began an affair with Silksif.
- The Doom of Tjaraholt (Sessions 5-6, 17-19, 26-27)
Dark events have been happening in the homestead of Tjaraholt
from the start of the campaign, starting with the crimes
and death of Killer-Gest. Later, a servant was killed --
it turned out by members of the Tappan tribe who still
believed that dark magic was being worked there.
- Maushop Poulsson (Sessions 13-16)
Poul's young son Maushop was captured by Redaxes in 1385, in
the same raid which killed his estranged wife Amagansa.
During the expedition of 1392, he recovered Maushop -- who
was being fostered by the war chief Hiawatha. Since then,
he has tried to bring Maushop back into Viking culture.
However, Maushop retains a mysterious side of his Redaxe
upbringing.
- Skallagrim's Rise ()
Skallagrim began as a respected huscarl of the the Brygjafael
homestead. In 1393, he bought some land of his own and married
the wealthy (if eccentric) widow Borgny the Sharp-Tongued.
He was quietly aided by the matriarch of Brygjafael, Aud the
Deep-Minded, who felt that he would make a good leader to
unite several clans.
