Former makers of the Star Wars RPG (D6 system), along with Hercules and Xena, Torg, Paranoia, Ghostbusters, Shatterzone, and the Masterbook system (including numerous worldbooks). Founded around 1983 or so. In 1999, they underwent bankruptcy, after losing the "Star Wars" license. They then merged with "Yeti", a French graphics design house working in books, cartoons, and multimedia. Yeti produced a number of choose-your-own-ending books and expanded its games production. The combined company is called "D6Legend, Inc." and is a part of Humanoids Publishing. "West End Games" remains a brand name for the new company. They have since released the DC Universe RPG and the Metabarons RPG (based on a French sci-fi comic book).

The company was founded as an independent gaming fanzine originally called "Arcanum" that appeared in 1986. The magazine was shortly renamed "White Wolf". Later they published "Vampire: The Masquerade" which kicked off a highly successful line of RPGs. The magazine continued publication for a time, and was retitled "Inphobia" briefly before folding in 1995 or so. The company includes several subsidiaries, including the Sword & Sorcery brand which publishes 3rd edition D&D (aka "D20") supplements, and the ArtHaus brand which publishes one-off game lines.

In September 1999, WotC was acquired by Hasbro, who had previously acquired Avalon Hill. In summer 2000, they acquired Last Unicorn Games. In December 2000, founder Peter Adkinson quit around the time when a large set of layoffs were done.
